What are smart meters and why are they being installed?

Smart meters are devices designed to measure your electricity usage in a digital format and provide information to your electricity provider. The data is sent digitally and does not require a physical meter reader to view your usage on site. Smart meters also provide a means for remotely measuring power supply, so providers know when the power is out, and allow power to be switched on or off without a field technician visiting the premises.

What is the advantage of a smart meter for consumers?

Smart meters provide up to date information on electricity usage, measured in 30-minute intervals. This enables consumers to have almost real time information to understand where they can alter their consumption and effectively reduce bills. Eventually, the technology will allow smart meters to make readings at 5-minute intervals and give extremely useful insight into the way consumers are using energy on a daily basis.

At Sumo we use smart meter usage to help you detect spikes in your energy usage. All Sumo customers receive an introductory email to BillCap which then allows customers to keep on top of their energy usage.

Who can use a smart meter and how do I get one?

In Victoria smart meters are mandated by the Victorian Government. Interstate in NSW, SA, TAS, QLD and ACT smart meters are being installed by default for all new builds and old defective meters that need replacing. WA and the NT so far have not adopted the new smart meters, but consumers can opt to have them installed in some situations if they talk to their electricity providers.

Some electricity providers may offer to upgrade you to a smart meter for a fee. At Sumo we are happy to assist our customers where we can. If you are a VIC Sumo customer and believe you are having trouble with your smart meter then please call us on 13 88 60, for NSW customer’s looking to install a smart meter please contact a Sumo customer service agent on 13 88 60 to see where we can assist.
