  3. Getting Ready For Winter: How To Prepare For Gas Usage Ahead.
knguyen@sumo.com.au May 19, 2025

As the days grow shorter and the temperatures dip, many of us feel the chill creeping into our homes. With this seasonal shift comes the inevitable rise in gas usage, whether heating our homes, providing hot water, or cooking our meals. Around this time of year, many people start noticing a significant jump in their gas bills.
Recently, we’ve seen a surge in discussions on various forums, with many people expressing their surprise and frustration at how quickly their winter gas bills have risen. If you're one of those individuals taken aback by the increase in your gas bill as the colder months approach, you're not alone!
Let’s dive in and explore ways to stay warm without breaking the bank!

Why Are Winter Gas Bills Increasing?

The main reason for this increase is the higher demand for gas-powered appliances such as heaters, hot water systems, and cooking appliances during the colder months. With the need to keep our homes warm and comfortable, gas consumption increases, leading to higher bills.
However, it's not just about the increased usage; the type of heating system and its efficiency play a significant role. Cold weather can significantly impact energy use, and costs can escalate quickly if your home relies on less efficient systems. For example, The Victorian government says nearly 60 per cent of homes in Victoria are under-insulated, or have no insulation at all (Insulation discounts).
But here's an important question: Are you still on a good gas price plan? Reviewing your gas plan is always a good idea to ensure you’re still getting the best deal. A quick check can help ensure you're not paying more than necessary during the winter season.

How to Prepare for the Winter Months

Check Your Home’s Insulation
One of the most effective ways to reduce heating costs is to ensure your home is adequately insulated. Poor insulation causes heat to escape, meaning your gas heater has to work harder to maintain warmth. Start by inspecting your insulation in key areas like the roof and walls. If your roof lacks insulation or your walls are poorly sealed, cold air can easily seep in, causing you to crank up the heat even more.
Investing in sound insulation may seem like an upfront cost, but keeping your home warmer and reducing your reliance on heating can pay off in the long run.
Seal Any Gaps or Drafts
Along with insulation, check for any gaps or drafts around windows and doors. These little openings can be responsible for a lot of heat loss. Use weatherstripping or draft stoppers to seal these gaps and keep the warmth inside.
Upgrade to More Efficient Appliances
If you're using old gas appliances, they may not operate as efficiently as they should. Newer models of gas heaters and hot water systems are often more energy-efficient, which can help you save money from your winter gas in the long term. Look for appliances with high energy ratings, designed to consume less energy while providing the same comfort level.

Many states offer support for upgrading your appliances through energy rebates and discounts. For example, the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program provides discounts on energy-efficient products to help reduce your energy consumption and bills. You can receive rebates or discounts on appliances that help save energy and reduce emissions.

Victorian government has announced plans to subsidise the installation of ceiling insulation in Victorian homes (Insulation discounts)
