QRU Media Release: Sumo Energy Partner With QRU For Hospital Cup and Founders Cup

The Queensland Rugby Union is excited to announce that Sumo Energy is to become the official naming rights partner of the Hospital Cup and Founders Cup through to the end of 2027.

Sumo energy partners with Queensland Rugby Union

The Australian-owned and operated energy provider sees Queensland's premier club competition as the ideal way to strengthen its commitment to the communities it serves in South-East Queensland. Alongside the partnership, the company is opening a Brisbane office in the coming months to further its footprint and involvement across the state.

"As a company, this is our first sporting sponsorship of this level. We feel a natural fit to grassroots. We don't want to just be a name on the jersey but embed ourselves in the community in a positive way," Sumo Energy's Head of Marketing Alex Selles said.

"The rugby dressing room is unique. Getting ready to go into battle, the camaraderie, the way players use the game to define themselves, their communities, and so on. That's very powerful in grassroots clubs.

"Doing business in local communities is who we are and South-East Queensland is a high priority area for 2026 and beyond.

"We see the momentum to rugby in Australia as a whole and that only goes up with the Rugby World Cup coming in 2027."

Selles has been the driving force behind the new partnership alongside Sumo Energy CEO Kel Fitzalan. Both know the power of rugby through the fun of their high school years playing the game and enjoying the game as fans in packed stadiums for major Tests.

Memorable moments elevate the Hospital Cup every season. So it was when Bond University swept through August from fourth spot to claim the trophy on grand final day in a 27-25 thriller against Brothers.

The Gold Coast-based Bond University women won the Founders Cup to complete a hat-trick of premierships.

"We are delighted to welcome Sumo Energy as a valued partner to support grassroots rugby through the Sumo Energy Hospital Cup and Sumo Energy Founders Cup," QRU Chief Executive David Hanham said.

"We have great pride in the Hospital Cup as one of the premier club competitions in Australian sport and the rise of women's rugby is demonstrated every year with the Founders Cup going from strength to strength.

"We will work closely with Alex, Kel and their team to elevate the Sumo Energy brand through these competitions, our clubs and our media partners."
