What is the Energy Bill Relief Fund?
The Energy Bill Relief Fund provides direct rebates on electricity bills. In most cases, payments are applied automatically to the energy account balance, so customers don’t need to take extra steps to benefit.
In the 2024–25 financial year, households received up to $300 energy rebates, while eligible small businesses could get up to $325. From 1 July 2025, the Australian Government has extended the Energy Bill Relief Fund for another two quarters in the 2025-2026 budget. A further $1.8 billion extension has been announced:
For most customers, during the 2025–26 financial year, the:
Household rebate is up to $150 in two instalments of $75 (July and October 2025).
Small businesses' rebate is a one-off rebate of $150 from July 2025.
Who is eligible for energy bill relief?
Most Australian households that receive an electricity bill and are connected to the grid are eligible for rebates until 2025. This includes households in external and non-self-governing territories.
In most cases, your electricity provider will automatically apply the bill relief to your account.
If you’re a Sumo Energy customer, the rebate will be applied directly to your electricity bill, and you won’t need to take any extra steps.

If you live in an embedded network
Households in embedded networks. For example, caravan parks, apartment buildings, retirement villages, or residential communities are also eligible for rebates.
If you’re in an embedded network, you might need to contact your energy provider or check your state or territory’s website to confirm the process.
Small businesses
Small businesses are also eligible if they meet their state or territory’s criteria based on annual electricity consumption thresholds.
If your small business electricity use is below the threshold your state or territory government sets, you will receive a rebate.
In most cases, rebates are applied automatically, and you won’t need further action.
Businesses consuming above the threshold will not be eligible.
Below are the annual electricity consumption thresholds for small business customers in each state and territory.
State | Annual electricity consumption threshold for small business customers |
NSW | 100 MWh |
VIC | 40 MWh |
QLD | 100 MWh |
WA | 50 MWh |
SA | 160 MWh |
TAS | 150 MWh |
ACT | 100 MWh |
