  3. Winter Prep Starts Now: Don’t Make These Costly Heating Mistakes
knguyen@sumo.com.au May 18, 2026

Winter’s just around the corner in Australia, bringing shorter days, chilly mornings and heaters slowly kicking back in. And if you're not prepared, your next energy bill might be the scariest thing about winter.

Two key factors drive high electricity bills in winter, seasonal changes and daily habits. The moment temperatures drop, energy usage spikes. The good news? Both are entirely within your control.

A little preparation now, while we're still in autumn, goes a long way toward a warm, comfortable winter that won't drain your wallet.

Here's your practical, room-by-room guide to getting winter-ready.

 - Upgrade to winter bedding like doonas, weighted blankets, and electric blankets to stay warm without overusing heating.

- Use low-cost heat hacks such as hot water bottles or microwave wheat bags for overnight warmth.

- Prevent heat loss by sealing draughts around doors and windows with weather strips and door seals.

- Close curtains and blinds at night to trap heat, and open north-facing windows during the day for natural warmth.

- Clean your split system filters before winter to improve heating efficiency and reduce energy use.

- Consider upgrading old heaters to an energy-efficient reverse-cycle split system.

- Wear warm layers, thermal clothing, slippers, and hoodies indoors before increasing the thermostat.

saving electricity winter

1. Invest in Winter Bedding (Before You Even Touch the Thermostat)

One of the highest-impact, lowest-cost changes you can make before winter hits is simply upgrading your bedding. A high-quality winter duvet or weighted blanket keeps your body heat close to you through the night, so your heater doesn't need to run on full blast to keep you comfortable while you sleep.

Pair that with an electric blanket, and you've got a genuinely efficient setup. Electric blankets use significantly less electricity than portable heaters or running your split system overnight, and they keep you warm from the moment you slide into bed.

If you're nervous about leaving an electric blanket on, a hot water bottle or a microwave wheat bag is a brilliant alternative. Heat it before bed, tuck it under the covers, and you'll climb into a warm bed without spending a cent on overnight heating.

This is exactly the kind of daily habit shift that makes a measurable difference on your bill, and it's one your electricity provider will never tell you to skip.

2. Know Where Your Heat Is Actually Going

You could have the most efficient heater on the market and still waste a fortune if your home is leaking heat like a sieve. Up to 40% of a home's heating energy is lost through windows. If your budget allows, upgrading to double glazing is one of the smartest long-term investments in your home's energy performance.

But if double glazing isn't on the cards right now, there are cheaper wins:

-  Seal your draughts. Gaps around doors, windows, and skirting boards force your heating system to run longer cycles to compensate for the cold air creeping in. Weatherstrips and door seals cost under $50, and they're among the highest-return changes you can make.

- Use your blinds as insulation. Close all curtains and blinds after dark to retain heat. During the day, open north-facing blinds to let the winter sun do some of the heating work for free.

A well-sealed, well-insulated home means your heater works smarter, not harder.

3. Clean or Upgrade Your Split System

If your home has a reverse-cycle split system, winter is its time to shine. Split systems are among the most energy-efficient ways to heat a home, but only if they're running cleanly.

Before the cold really sets in, clean or replace the filters. A clogged filter forces the unit to work harder, consuming more energy and delivering less warmth.

And if your home is still relying on older heating technology, resistive strip heaters, portable oil column heaters, or gas ducted systems with aging ductwork, it may be time to have a serious conversation about upgrading to a split system.

4. Layer Up

There's a reason Oodie and Ugg boots have become an unofficial winter uniform. Layering up at home before you reach for the thermostat is one of the simplest daily habits that keeps bills down.

Warm socks, a thermal layer, a cosy hoodie, these cost nothing to wear and can comfortably let you run the thermostat a degree or two lower. For every degree you drop your thermostat, you can save meaningful dollars across a full billing cycle.

It sounds obvious, but this is exactly the kind of small habit that separates households with manageable winter bills from those left with nasty surprises.

Preparation Pays

Winter doesn't mean your energy bill has to go through the roof. You can stay warm all season without the nasty surprise at the end of the billing cycle with a bit of prep, such as better bedding, sealed draughts, a clean split system, and a few smarter daily habits.

The tips above won't take a weekend to implement. Most of them take an hour. And that hour could save you hundreds over the winter months.
