Smart Meters (NSW)

Remote reconnection and remote disconnection

As smart meters are increasingly rolled out across the energy market, disconnection and reconnection of electricity meters may occur remotely. Sumo may need to take some steps to ensure any remote disconnection or reconnection occur safely.

Can my power be turned on or off remotely?

If you have a smart meter at your property, your reconnection or disconnection may occur remotely.

Why do I have to turn the mains power off for remote connection?

It is important that you ensure the main switch is in the off position before remote reconnection. Your main power board is sometimes located near the front door or close to your power meter, and contains all the circuit breakers for your property. In some apartment buildings it is located in a common area.

For safety reasons, when the metering company is arranging a remote reconnection, they will monitor to detect if an appliance is drawing power. If so, they will disconnect supply. This is a safety precaution in case appliances such as a heater or cooker are switched on and left unattended.

Where can I find the main switch or my meter?

Your main switch is located inside your switchboard, which can be located inside or outside your property. Your electricity meter is typically located next to the switchboard. In some apartment buildings it is located in a common area.

Please contact us if you require assistance.

Why do I need to be on site when arranging the re-energisation? (NSW ONLY)

When you contact us to arrange re-energisation, we will ask you to confirm you are at the property that is to be re-energised. We require this for safety reasons. We will need to run through some safety checks and some of these questions require you to be on site. For instance, we need to ensure that there is no exposed wiring, and no appliances such as a heater or cooker has been left on that, if unattended, has the potential to cause a safety issue. It’s important you follow our instructions carefully to ensure the safe and timely connection of power to your property.

Why was my disconnection / reconnection carried out manually and not remotely?

In cases where no smart meter is available on site OR a hazard or fault is identified with the meter the connection or disconnection service maybe performed on site.

Can I refuse a remote reconnection / disconnection?

If you have safety concerns about remote connection or disconnection services please contact our moving experts on 03 9102 8400 to discuss your options.

When will the reconnection / disconnection occur?

A connection or disconnection service typically occurs between 7am-7pm on the requested date.
